We have heard them all: I never have enough money, I never have enough time, my partner never listens to me and on we go. Are they valid? Why do we say them? Do they make a difference? Consider that there are two types: Committed and Hot Air!

One of the most powerful distinctions I learned on the FIRST DAY on my Landmark Forum back in October 1993 was the so called: Racket – a way of “doing” or “having” plus a persistent complaint. It is explained differently these days! In the inquiry, we were asked about common persistent complaints we had about ourselves, others and even life itself.


We were then asked to look at each ‘racket’ from two points of view; The COST and the PAYOFF of these dogged grievances! Well I guess many people are unhappy when they don’t have enough money or time. For myself, I saw it stopped me, had me sad and I certainly wasn’t ‘lively’ when I shared this particular upset. Payoff, what do you mean? What do you get about having ‘not enough money’? Hmm…I get to be right! (Look at my bank account!) I get to justify my reasons for not having enough money! I get to dominate..don’t ask Charles, he never has enough money! Ewww!

Wow, so these continuous problems are really stopping me in having what I want! Ahah! So what do you do when you notice one of these re-occurring groans starts up again? Stop and notice…IS THE PAYOFF WORTH IT? Great question!


But then, what about good complaints? Ones like “The World will never stop fighting, so that we have no more wars!” What do you do there? Aaah that’s where a COMMITTED COMPLAINT ARISES! Consider a committed complaint is only ever delivered to someone who can make a difference with the complaint. So in this case; sharing this issue with a country’s leader? Indeed all 195 countries’ leaders and hey, most of them are men…ahh another don’t get me started??!! Best thing is to consider is that committed complaints can MAKE GREAT DIFFERENCES.

So the next time you indulge in a complaint, notice who you are sharing it with and if it isn’t someone who can’t make a difference with your protest, perhaps it is all HOT AIR! Now a great question to ask is what is YOUR BIGGEST COMPLAINT?

LEADERSHIP – Not Always From The Front

How often do you think of leadership as a person who takes the lead by going first? Consider that there are other ways of demonstrating leadership that has the so-called ‘leader’ be in the ‘background’. What does it take? How does that work? Surely, in order to be a good leader, one needs to “lead by example”?

Ever since I was a young boy, and already noticing I was falling behind, (in terms of growing taller!), I developed a persona that confronted being a so-called ‘short-arse’. I realized that by being ‘popular’ was one way to divert my situation, so to speak.  Because I was fun-loving and had a pioneering spirit, I became skillful in organizing my friends to follow me, often resulting in happy memories, built for the future and a whole lot of fond reminiscing. By the age of 30, I thought I was a good  ‘leader’.


1994 had me start the Self Expression and Leadership program run by Landmark Education. I entered this 3-month training course with a FUTURE I created for myself called: “Love expressed through Inspiration, Energy, and Enthusiasm.” I was given a coach and I created the Ceasefire Project; The Causing of World Peace (by 2020) through the use of FIRE. Living into THAT FUTURE, I found myself enrolling people to join me to learn and perform a fire breathing show at the Sydney Opera House, which gained Channel 10 News in Australia and CNN News internationally in the name of World Peace. I did indeed “find myself expressing my thinking and ideas effectively in a way that called forth the alignment, cooperation, and partnership of others”!


1997 had me start the Team Management and Leadership Program, again run by Landmark Education. I took the Ceasefire Project (mentioned above) into this program and shared it with participants from Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, (Australia) & Auckland and Christchurch (New Zealand). Having taught the participants, they returned to their cities and organized and performed WITHOUT MY PRESENCE. The main skill I learned was true to “be empowered to work with others in a way that their leadership abilities are significantly expanded”. Essentially, I had learned to disappear!

In summary, with effective communication and the distinction “ENROLLMENT” present with those around you, you are completely capable of causing action by being an INSPIRATION. Often the only that is stopping you for being an effective leader is yourself! Perhaps the question we all have (sometimes) is:

“What’s Missing, the presence of which will Make a Difference!?”

Mirror Work – An Access to a NEW YOU

Many of you will know I started my personal development in October 1993 when I participated in The Landmark Forum in Sydney, Australia. This entry-level weekend, consisting of a Friday, Saturday and Sunday followed by a Tuesday night, opened me up to a world I never knew; in the domain of “what I didn’t know that I didn’t know; indeed my BLINDSPOTS!

Wow, what a revelation to DISCOVER and UNDERSTAND why I was the way I was at the fine old age of 30 when I started this adventure. I recall having one of my first insights, regretting how I never had come across this education when I was YOUNG.. say 18 years old versus the 12 years later. How much heartache would I have saved with many of my relationships and how much “laser focus” I would have gained to pursue what was important to me instead of conforming, settling for second best etc….Still, what it allowed me to see and understand was all those thoughts of….”AAAH No wonder I…….” and yes, it had me complete the past 30 years of my life such that, on the Sunday of the course, I was left with a BLANK CANVAS where I could create a future for my life that inspired me.

Moving forward, I undertook some of’s senior programs including The Introduction Leaders program and this is where I came across MIRROR WORK. The six-month course developed me in many ways, including “Learning to present myself more effectively and speak powerfully to large groups of people”. We undertook all sorts of tools and practices and then one day, we were introduced to an exercise that invited us to BE 10 TIMES MORE EXCITED (in front of the mirror!) What does that mean? What does that look like, I hear you ask? Hmmm…sounds silly I hear you say or how do you “be 10 times more excited?” Great question!

MIRROR WORK (and 10 times more excited!)

Everyone is different and how I did it was to lock my eyes to my eyes (in the mirror) and then shake madly, still engaging my eyes with myself…….vigorous trembling, moving from side to side and all the while, locking my eyes. I pulled odd, funny, sad, and crazy faces at myself, all the while with eyes “zeroed in” on myself. IMPORTANTLY I noticed and observed all the THOUGHTS I had about myself…how I looked, this is silly, this is funny, this is hard, what am I doing, what is the point and so on. WHAT EVOLVED, however, over the six months of this extraordinary leadership course, was a slow yet powerful ability to BE WITH MYSELF, no matter what I was doing in the mirror.

What this has allowed for me is an EXCELLENT BREAKTHROUGH in FULL SELF EXPRESSION. Today, whenever I meet new people, I know I have “expanded and strengthened my skills in leadership and communication” and that I am able to “generate conversations that powerfully call people into action”.

Give It A Try! (and Pass It On!)

If each and every one of you reading this; can recall some time in your childhood, where you really engaged in an activity that you loved, with perhaps “not a care in the world”, then maybe you will gain access and revisit that cherished moment of being fully self-expressed. GO TO A MIRROR (perhaps alone at this stage!) and try on BEING 10 TIMES MORE EXCITED with yourself, making sure your eyes are locked in with yourself. Notice your thoughts and consider that “doing mirror work” is a wonderful way of reviewing your childhood’s full satisfaction and gives you access to developing a NEW YOU. Back in 1994 in the old ADVANCED COURSE run by Landmark Education, we watched several movie SEGMENTS to distinguish certain aspects of BEING COACHED including the 4 JOBS(lessons) Karate Kid “HAD TO DO” to learn the art.

1. “Wax on: wax off” 

2. “Sand the floor”

3. “catch the fly”  

4. “paint the fence”  

Karate Kid then turns up, having done all 4 JOBS: “Wax on: wax off”; “Sand the floor”, “catch the fly” and “paint the fence” and this is WHAT HAPPENS:



The question for anyone is: ARE YOU WILLING TO BE COACHED or do hold on to that childhood stance: “Don’t you tell me what to do???!
